Bangkok turning cosmopolitan café culture

Now I have a selection of outstanding, cosy, elegant, hipster (just had to put that in)cafés, with excellent coffee! You think you just arrived in New York, Paris, Milan, London or Stockholm.

Casa Lapin Café:

I’ve been living in Bangkok for 7 years now and I’ve seen a remarkable change in café culture in the last few years. When I came to Bangkok I often ended up at Starbucks, whether I liked it or not…..

Now I have a selection of outstanding, cosy, elegant, hipster (just had to put that in)cafés, with excellent coffee! You think you just arrived in New York, Paris, Milan, London or Stockholm.

A few I really like are:  Casa Lapin in Soi 49 Sukhumvit, Un Fashion Café ( by the people of Un Fashion Vintage shop) in Ekkamai Soi 10 , Gallery Coffee Drip in BACC, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre at BTS station National Stadium, Rocket Coffee bar in Sathorn Soi 12 (by the founder of Hyde & Seek, and truly fantastic cocktails mix-ologists etc. etc….) I could go on and on, but today I will concentrate on Casa Lapin and show you some photographs as well.

They first started out in a really small coffee shop on Thonglor, which still exist in this cool place where you can have coffee, go next door and have some food, and next door to do some shopping ….. but I would say that I anyway prefer the one in Sukhumvit Soi 49, it’s a beautiful shophouse with an outdoor terrace and the indoor  is displayed on 2 floors, I always sit downstairs at the big community table, up stairs is more of a cosy and more isolated corner, I watch people, work, read their magazines like Kinfolk, Fantastic Man, Inventory, Monocle etc. Great selection of magazines is always important, or just read my book and enjoy the great atmosphere.

When it comes to the coffee itself , it seems like the Thais are also looking themselves for better quality and the interest of coffee has definitely taken a turn….. Thailand produce as well a very good coffee from the Northern parts of Thailand around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, which are getting very popular.

i used to end up at petrol stations, i forget the coffee shops name, used to be one of the few good coffees in the city. Kl is finally catching on also, but with a big divide between the usual lousy startbucks ( but i do like their earl grey with lavender tea) and the cooler hangouts around town.
